Why you need to become a decision-maker this new year

By Matt Danswan

I am always surprised each new year how people will randomly say how the next year is going to be better than one before, or the ones previous to it. My immediate thought is, why?

Why does one year automatically get better than the previous one if you’ve not really done anything different this year that sets up next year? Sorry to be a downer, but it just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Seasons of life are different for all of us. In life’s seasons, we are all in winter (or summer – depending on what side of the world you’re on). In the seasons of life, some reading this are in a wonderful season and life couldn’t be better, while others are going through a terrible time.

And granted, bad things happen … often things we cannot plan for, like Covid-19. However, in general terms, life is about reaping and sowing. What you sow you reap, in many different areas.

As you face a new year, this aticle is not to discourage you in any way, but more to encourage you to become a decision maker. As the saying goes, nothing changes if nothing changes. What changes do you need to make to your life? What do you need to do differently? Can you stop over this Christmas break and do a quick audit of your life across career, finances, relationships, goals and dreams? When you look at your vision, what are you doing each day to get a step closer to it?

I always try and find some time in my life to just stop and evaluate where I am going and what areas need attention. While I place my life in God’s hands and ask Him to direct it, at the same time, I am responsible for my day to day actions and decisions, and where I end up is due to my decisions.

So I urge you to be a decision maker. Don’t be afraid to make changes, to try new things and experiences; to meet new people, to read more books on inspiring people, to increase your skill and knowledge on subjects you want to excel at. Don’t leave your future entirely in God’s hands. Take steps and take affirmative action in your life.

2021 will not be different to 2020 if you keep doing the same thing, over and over, but expecting a different result.

As a side note, below is a fantastic video below from the late Jim Rohn on making change.
